Hills Group commissioned a £20m Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) facility in Westbury. This facility allows for an increase in the proportion of Wiltshire’s municipal waste. Diverted from landfill to more than 80%, with the process handling 60,000 tonnes of waste per year.
The treatment process requires a building infrastructure that includes extensive reinforced concrete reception pits, a large treatment hall, processing and storage areas, and office and welfare facilities.
The high-velocity cranes operating over the reception and treatment areas bared some challenges. Thus, overcoming a variety of foundation problems to support these high-intensity loads.
Clegg provided structural input during the early development stages of the scheme. We simultaneously designed the superstructure and substructure, and also designed the foundations.
The design and detail of over 200 tonnes of reinforcement took less than three months. Thus, meeting the contract programme, submitted by Principal Contractor Interserve.
