Project Overview
Christ Church Downend in Bristol, an iconic structure built in 1828, has undergone a careful restoration. This project focused on stabilising and reinforcing the building to address foundation settlement issues without disturbing its historical integrity. The refurbishment aimed to respect the church’s aesthetic while creating a usable modern space for the local community.
Clegg Contribution
We conducted visual inspections and reviewed historical records for an initial structural assessment. Modern engineering techniques were applied flexibly, prioritising preservation. Underpinning around the perimeter and key load-bearing points provided deep foundation support to prevent further settlement. Masonry walls were restored using crack stitching with stainless steel bars and repointing with lime-based mortar to match the original construction. Roof trusses were reinforced with steel plates and treated timber to guard against decay. Cleaning and aesthetic enhancements restored the church’s visual appeal.
Preserving Heritage
A primary focus of the restoration was maintaining the church’s historical character. Careful attention was paid to ensure that modern interventions did not detract from the building’s historical significance. Techniques were chosen to preserve the fabric of the structure, and all interventions were designed to be non-intrusive. We maintained the highest standards throughout the project. Working in close collaboration with the client and wider project team ensured a balance between structural needs and historical preservation. As a result, the church’s structural integrity has been significantly improved, allowing it to continue serving as a vibrant community hub.
