Project Overview
The Hungerford Community Tri-Service Station officially opened in July 2017. This significant project not only modernised the fire station but also established Royal Berkshire’s first community tri-service station, offering shared facilities for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS), Thames Valley Police (TVP), and South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS). The refurbishment aimed to integrate the fire station within the community it serves, ensuring that residents can lead safe and fulfilling lives. Given that the original station had reached the end of its serviceable life, the project involved demolishing the outdated appliance bay to construct a new, purpose-built extension. This renovation also included updated welfare facilities for firefighters and their partners in the police and ambulance services, featuring shared operational spaces and secure, separate kit rooms.
Clegg Contribution
Clegg played a crucial role in this transformation by implementing innovative spatial arrangements and advanced equipment, including specialised storage systems and drying units. Our team meticulously planned both public and emergency service access routes to guarantee safe navigation for personnel and the local community.
A notable aspect of the project was the careful sequencing of construction, which allowed the existing communications room to remain operational throughout the renovation, ensuring continuous fire coverage in the local area. The project also introduced a community room and a new disabled access lift, reinforcing RBFRS’s commitment to community engagement.
To enhance public safety, we focused on the building’s approaches, providing disabled parking and ensuring a safe separation between the deployment apron and the appliance bay. Large glazed doors in the appliance bay not only allowed ample daylight for emergency service teams but also improved public visibility into the station’s operations, fostering a stronger connection with the community it serves.
