All large car parks in France must have solar carports, the French government has announced. The new legislation gives large parks just three years to cover at least half of spaces with solar carports.
The action aims to help France reach its net zero targets.
The UK government has set a target to reach net zero emissions by 2050. With other countries like France taking more drastic measures to keep its targets, is it time for the UK to do the same?
Here’s everything you need to know about France’s new law, solar carports, and our solar carport projects.
France’s Solar Carport Requirements
Any car park from 80 to 400 spaces has five years from July 2023 to comply with the new legislation. Larger lots with more than 400 spaces have just three years.
At least half of the site must be covered with solar panels, generating up to 11 gigawatts of power – equivalent to a dozen nuclear reactors. Exceptions include heritage sites or those with architectural restraints and security risks.
It is, in part, a response to tensions between Europe and Russia to reduce reliance on French gas, as well as an investment in clean energy.
France has a larger plan to build solar farms on vacant land next to highways, railroad tracks, and agricultural areas.
Solar carports
Clean power, including solar energy, are at the core of the UK’s strategy for net zero emissions by 2050.
Solar currently sits at 14GW capacity and, with current rules in place, could grow five times by 2035.
Also known as photovoltaics, solar panels capture the sun’s energy, converting it into electricity. Extensively tested, depending on placement and weather conditions, they can process 15–22% of solar energy into clean power.
Although requiring a large battery bank for the night-time and low production in winter months, it is safer than traditional electric current.
Solar carports house solar panels on the roof. They serve two purposes: to protect cars from the elements (as normal carports do), and to generate renewable energy.
The power generated by solar carports can be used to power EV charging points in the car park, or it can be channelled for another purpose.
Our Renewable Energy Projects
From anaerobic digesters and sustainable housing to hydroelectric schemes and solar cars, we are working to shape a better world through renewable projects.
We have already worked on several solar carport projects for sustainably-minded businesses. For example, we completed a solar carport project with ECE Westworks at Shoreham Port.
We wholeheartedly support green initiatives and think the UK should follow France’s example by investing in renewable energy. If we are to reach net zero by 2050, more drastic measures need to be taken.
The renewable energy field is continually optimising, with technology advancing all the time. At Clegg Associates, we provide professional, reliable advice and aim to ensure high-value, minimal-risk propositions to help you do your part to reduce emissions.
