Situated in Blandford, Dorset, our Client required a sympathetic extension to the side of his traditional stone and brick thatched cottage. The room layouts and window locations required an internal steel frame and our challenge was to incorporate this frame, alongside more modern masonry construction methods, to give the traditional appearance that was required. We worked with our Client’s project manager to find the optimum position for the new steel frame, working to find the best compromise of the spans involved and the depths of the steel sections required. After calculating the various loads to be carried by the frame, we calculated the size of the steel beams and columns required, as well as their foundations.
